To the poster.... Never slate Michael Carrick in here, you will get nailed by the brown nosers who believe the world revolves around Man Utd, and that Rooney is better than Messi, Fergie is the messiah and Michael Carrick is world class.
What does he do? you're not on your own in not being impressed by what he contributes to the team. The truth is, he does very little. Carrick has a very specific set of qualities, his best role is to get the ball deep, and lay it off quickly to a player with the quality to open up opponents, he works best in the role that Alonso did for Liverpool. The massive problem for Carrick, is his game only works in a 4.3.3 formation. By that I mean he plays as the middle man in a three man midfield, so we have a defensive midfield, who charges down, tackles, and wins the ball, we have an attacking man, a playmaker, a forward thinker, and then we have Carrick just casually strolling around the middle, he gets the ball and lays it out wide or to the creative man as quick as possible.
Now, when we had Ronaldo, we used to play a 4.3.3, and Carrick was actually decent in the role he played (but in all honesty, championship midfielders would of looked good if they were surrounded by the likes of Scholes, Ronaldo and Rooney) But... when we play a two man centre midfield? Carrick just doesn't have the qualities that you need to represent Man Utd. Carrick by nature is very slow, he needs a lot of time on the ball to pick a pass, in a two man midfield, he just doesn't have the time he needs, and it results in him getting caught on the ball often (think Man City and Toure) he doesn't tackle, he isn't quick, he doesn't have a paticularly outstanding work rate, he's not really good in the air, so he offers very little in terms of a defensive midfielder in a two man midfield... Nor does he offer much as a playmaker, he just doesn't have the legs, speed of play and overall quality to excel in that role.
So the result? week after week fans are going to Old Trafford, seeing the likes of Rooney, Chica, Park, Nani etc, run themselves into the ground, light up Old Trafford, and then they look at Carrick, and ask "just what the hell is he contributing" the answer is the bare minimum. And I think fans in here are just being loyal to him because he's a red, you can't argue with it really. But I think when Anderson, Cleverley, Fletcher etc reach top form, everyone will realise that actually Carrick isn't quite good enough to play for us.
But like I said, don't give your honest opinion in a Man Utd forum if it involves any hint of being against anyone at Utd. A lot of people are just followers and don't like to do too much thinking in life, they're happy receiving state benefits, sitting in their own filth all day, and maybe going out for the odd riot. They can't form opinions of their own, so they just like to shout other people down. Ignore them, I say, everyone else does.
