    Sir Kones:
The 60s, 70s and 80s were a barren spell for United. Not a single title in the 60s and 70s.

We have actually won the league title in 1965 and 1967, the FA Cup in 1963, and the European Cup in 1968. It was only after Sir Matt Busby left, 1970, when we had our long, bleak years, due to instability and the want for instant success from the board.

Thanks, meant to put "not a single title in the 70's and 80's"....lotta numbers flying around when I was composing that post haha. Thanks again for catching that.

why isit going to get black? milan, barca, real, porto they have all been top of the respective leagues for hundreds of years....just because it happend to liverpool doesnt mean its going to happen to us
Of the teams you mentioned, Porto is the oldest, and has only been existence since 1893 (119 years). So it's an exaggeration to say they have dominated their leagues for hundreds of years. In regard to those teams winning their leagues: they are all similar in the number of times achieving that honor, most of them between 21-25 times (with Madrid leading the list with 31 domestic titles). That still means, even Madrid, only wins the title 28% of the time.

In comparison , United are very similar to all those clubs in regard to time in existence and number of titles won. We've been around a little bit longer than all of them, at 132 years, and have won 19 domestic titles. The biggest difference with United comes in the large percentage of our domestic titles that have been won since 1993. 12 of the 19 have come since 93. The 60s, 70s and 80s were a barren spell for United. Not a single title in the 70s and 80s. So it is fathomable that things could get black again.

All that said, I bet DLK would gladly swap the word "if" for the word "when" in his post.

The truth is that the brain can only remember fond memories of the past
Might be a good post, but I stopped reading after this - see above! This is patently not true at all...in fact the memory centers of the brain are far more likely to force a person to remember unpleasant times...so, as I said, couldn't continue reading after that!
2008 team was much better than this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2009 to. a younger paul and giggs, ronaldo? tevez??????????? younger ferdinand, van der sar?????????? younger and hungrier evra and vidic??????? gary neville still is better than our left backs now! wes bron was having a great season around than to. come on , we are not even good enough for europe anymore! it seems that you are the one living in the past! 90`s???? roy keane??? paul, giggs even younger and better??? veron? solskjer, york, cole? how about vannistlroy? do we have any strikers like that now???? dude you need a wake up call, oooops we had that when we got beaten to pieces iby athletic in UEFA CUP! Ronney is our only world class player now! vidic is great but getting older and with more injurys, so is ferdinand! the onley other player that comes close with some great play now is valencia who has been the best buy we have done since ronaldo left! phil jones is very takented but only 19 and need few seasons under his belt but we are still talking about potential so is cleverly(who is injury prone who wont get more than 10-20 games a season ! NO this isnt a team as good as teams of paste post ferguson time!

and realise that at no point in our history were we this perfect united that we people on here always seem to compare the current squad to....
no but we have always played a certain way( free-flowing attacking football) and unfortunatly the last couple of seasons that has not been the case especialy in europe.
this season we have played some fantastic free flowing football scored a heap of goals and scored 4 or 5 in a game on multiple occasions.....the reasom we struggled in europe this season is because the 4 4 2 leaves us to vunerable in defense, the only rleason we did so well using it last season in my opinion is because we had the best centre back in the world playing for us.....for me in europe the midfielders aare so technical with such imense stamina and ability to join the fowards that you need in my opinion 2 holding midfilders protecting the back four and another further fowward to attack and help keep possesion....nowadays possesion is everything

I see what you are trying to say, and I do understand that people are too often just comparing with the past when, in reality, that isn't always possible. Those teams that these people are comparing to in the past were in the peak of their powers, and they only reached once they went through the stages this team is currently going through. If we compare these teams to the other teams that were in the transition phase, I'd say that this is the strongest team I've seen that is in the transition phase. We're top of the league, and the only big issue is that this team did badly in Europe. Then again, the other teams in transition also did bad in Europe, lol.

About your second point, the reason why we didn't win enough in Europe was because, as Sir Alex said about the 1990's teams, their approach was wrong. They were too attack-minded and too cavalier in their play, and with continental football not being like this, Man. Utd. were often undone by resilient, disciplined, tactical defending and counterattacks against few defenders at the back. Sir Alex realized this and changed the approach when going for a 4-2-3-1 from 2001 to 2004, and we did better, only losing out barely to Borussia Dortmund in the semis, and to Real Madrid in the quarters. However, we still didn't get a Champions League, then. Then came the 2006-present period, where we made it to 3 finals in 4 years since the 2007/08 season, and that is a big achievement, no doubt about it. However, we only won one Champions League trophy during that time as Barcelona started to improve into the force they are now.

We should have done better in Europe, but from what I am seeing here, we are always improving in terms our European campaigns whenever we get a team that is at its peak and past the transition phase. In the 1990's, we didn't do so well. In the early 21st century, we were better, but not yet good enough. In the present period (2006 onwards) we made it to 3 finals, something only Barcelona has done in that period. Who knows how much better we will do in the future?

Nice to see someone gets it!

That's exactly why the fans who are most unhappy when United lose a game tend to be supporters since the 70s and 80s. They have an over-riding fear that things may return to where their unpleasant memories are and they are afraid of that. Afraid that another team will come along and dominate like Liverpool did.

I agree with the OP and think he us making a very intelligent and thoughtful point.

Sorry but I was a supporter during those times and also during the post Munich years, I don't find I get most unhappy when we lose --- in fact I've been around long enough and seen enough to know that noting lasts forever - IF and when our glory days are over I'll still be United forever ---- which is more than can be said for some of the so called fans on here - if they can rate a season were we are top of the Table in March after trailing City for so long as one of our worst ever then pity them in the future when things do get black

Maybe everything i have said in the orginal post isnt spot on....but the point im trying to make is that we tend to judge current players on our fantastic history and not realise that those glorious years were a battle we didnt just strole easily to everything we won.....role on more of them i say FOREVER RED

OP there is something I agree with what you say and there is also things I have different opinion but don't be too complacent about the future .we all hope that future will be bright but so did Liverpool fans 22 years ago....so you never know
