Red:For me it has to be De Gea or Valencia!
Both been really good this season especially De Gea but who do we obviously miss more in a match De Gea, Valencia or Scholes. When Scholes hasn't been playing or is substituted the team as a whole play less effectively. Evidence in this are the Liverpool F.A. cup match, the Chelsea 3-3 draw, both Bilbao matches, and the recent Wigan game.
Red: De Gea has not put a foot wrong since Lindergaard got injured, and has made pivotal saves, game winning save!
I was a big supporter of De Gea coming to Utd after seeing him over a couple of season at Athletico. Even when people were crying out for Neurer I knew De Gea was a better keeper. He had to adapt to the English game and that took a bit and thats to be expected. I have no doubt he is going to get better and if he stays here long term I could see him surpassing the great Dane. But he did have a blip during the season and was in and out of the team for a short period. When Scholes came back he totally organised the midfield mess; which at one stage has Rooney playing in it. Utd went on a winning streak with him back in the team and only dropped point/ lost matches when he wasn't playing. His contribution to the team has allowed utd to claw back City lead and allowed Utd to surpass them. In effect Scholes has made it possible for Utd to win the league. Its because of this that Scholes has to be considered our player of the season.
Red:Its been more of a team game this season, rather than
individual brilliance
This is why I think Scholes is over looked. He is a brilliant individual player and uses his great ability to get other players/ the team playing. It's no coincidence that when Scholes isn't playing the team as a whole don't play as good. That is Scholes individual brilliance. Allowing the team to keep the ball and maintain control of the game.
Red:which may have been our shortfall in Europe in a way!
It's no coincidence that we suffered in Europe i.e. the Champions league and Europa league because Scholes didn't play in either and the team didn't play well. Yet all the other candidates played in some or all of those European matches and struggled. Again to clarify. This player of the season, not most IMPROVED player of the season. That would be either Carrick or Evans. If we do win the league it comes down to Paul Scholes and that is why he should be our player of the season.
