It seems Gaitan is a quiet lad, not much hype about him - just about the character required to fit in at Man Utd. He has got that nice change of pace, not sufficient to be an outright winger - so maybe Sir Alex is seeing him as a potential central player? I wonder what happens to Anderson if this deal goes through though...

We do need to strengthen the midfield.If Scholes gets tired next season around February,and Anderson is not fit, we lack players.

The first sentence was for Matt who really wants people to believe that he's a winger and not an AM. I'm sorry mate, but I watched around the same number of games (including in the PL), and I for one can't say he was my first choice, but Goetze is staying, Muniain is Madrid bound and as far as Lucas goes- I've had enough of Brazilians and their weak mentality. Hazard as good a prospect as he may be, is too much of a trouble waiting to happen for this club. Gaitan is fast with brilliant acceleration, knows how to go past a defender, is a good passer, not greedy, left footed and very versatile. To say otherwise, either you haven't watched him, or you really are trying to put him down for nothing.

Well goetze and Lucas were never realistic choices. With Munian it would have been tough to lure and it would come down to what we offered if interested and Hazard is the only other realistic choice. I would prefer Hazard over Gaitan as I think he is a much better player. However like you said hazard's mentality and attitude could be trouble waiting to happen.

He is a good player, didnt mean to try say otherwise, my main problem if this signing happens is the fact I dont think he is much better than what we have. We could have used the money towards fixing the midfield a bit.

Everyone loves a few stats so here's a few for ya Gaitan - PLD 30 Gls - 3 Asst - 17. not badmore to the assist side. Hazard PLD - 32 Gls - 15 Asst - 13. Goetz PLD - 22 GLS - 6 ASST - 8 so when you look at the figures yes Gaitan is a lower end of the scale but take into consideration the leagues. Hazard french league lower standard and Goetz german league lower standard compared to the prem its all swings and round abouts Gaitan will add further squad depth granted at a hefty cost but i fell he can offer a lot to the team with options of playing rooney AM/SS (not best position but potential) or Young in the same role which he did at villa playing just behind the strikers.

And you will find in 2 seasons he has only scored 10 goals and 7 assists, with 3 goals and 5 assists coming this season. Less then Young, Valencia, Nani, Giggs and hell even Park this season has 4 goals and 4 assists.

This is what I mean when I say Gaitan isnt really any better then what we already have.

Another thing is HOW will we play? I dont see us dropping wingers considering we have so many. With Hernandez and Welbeck doing well it seems crazy to drop both of them to the bench and it seems weird to have Rooney as our only striker. Considering he prefers his open and free current role and well it hasnt worked well when we have used Rooney on his own. Bringing in Gaitan isnt going to stop Rooney dropping back and isnt going to stop Rooney wanting to be on the ball all the time and influence play.

I dont agree with the transfer but the more I think about it, it may not be too bad. Glazers have spent a record amount for tampa bay . Maybe they are prepared to do the same for utd. now if Gaitan is coming in for 20m, clyne for 300k. those 2 look pretty certain. But we have say 60m-80m to spend, plus money from any players leaving. then we would still have a lot left to sort out the CM, which is everyones worry. Ild love us to sign martinez but cant see it happening. ild be happy if he was our only other signing. But we may sign strootman for 15m, kagawa for 15m and cissokho for 15m. total out lay 65,300,000.00. not a bad squad then and i dont think people would eb complaing. i think the worry is over if he is our main summer signing or our only one

Gaitan can work in that system it would just be Scholes-Carrick/fletcher - Young/Nani Valencia Rooney Gaitan This could be quality but need a propa CM + DM to replace Scholes and Fletcher respectively.

Looks to me as if Benfica are in need of a LB as last summer they sold Fábio Coentrão to Real Madrid and now have Émerson, who they bought from brazil to replace Fábio Coentrão and also have Luís Martins in their LB positions. So you never know, Fergie might be looking at signing one of their LB's and giving them Fabio as a short term replacement. Not everything revolves around Gaitan.

I think this rumor has some mettle to it. I am not the one to jump the gun on paper gossip but I have a strong feeling this one is true and I am not at all unhappy about it. We needed a good left-footed player and he fits the bill. Most probably we are going to offload Park and Berbatov this summer and he could fill in both roles. Believe you me this would be a good signing.

I think I am just trying to get away from it all to be honest. I'm not one to guess because I just like to wait and see but still like the build-up :) But I have watched Gaitan for the last 6 months and watched almost all of his playing time and he just hasn't impressed me. I think it might be because i'm trying to relate him so hard to the likes of Silva and his very fast pace, but then again most of the games he play are on the wing. I'm talking about 90% of them, even more. He is naturally a left winger like Young but can be played in CAM as well if vitally necessary.. I can't see the difference between his and Youngs playing position so we are just going to end up with another guy that can do exactly the same as young.. Plus he is not worth more than £15 mil.

Actually he played in the center until his move to Benfica.

Hope we dont see Gaitan come anywhere near signing at United. He is not the signing we need, the fact that Nani warms the bench shows we have enough wingers for the time being. Plus from what I have seen from Gaitan he would not add much to the team.
