    Re: Phil Jones

Playing a young lad like Jones in different positions helps him become a more complete defender. Nothing wrong with having a guy who can play anywhere along the back line. I honestly see him having the potential to become a CDM in the 4-2-3-1 formation, if his ball control improves drastically that is. He is a ball hawk and at 20 the sky's the limit for Phil

Phil Jones said his preferred position is CB and he was bought as a CB. I think he needs to play there to reach his full potential

Rio will get a few knocks and rotation play a key role. He will get plenty of games next season, he just needs to make the most of the chances he gets.

Would rather see him pushing for a spot at centre back, and maybe the odd game in europe and the cups in the midfield. The midfield experience will develop his game nicely, and make him a more refined defender. He's not a natural right back, and neither is Smalling. Rafael needs another right back to give him more specialised competition, and make him a less rash defender with any luck.

He will play where he is needed, his favoured position is obviously as a CB but he's 5th choice in my opinion for that position.

Think Jones and Smalling, will fight it out for the right back Position, in the big games...........They will also play at Centre Back, in other games, or Rotate, with both Positions...

This. Me and the guy who sits around thinking how Jones needs to be converted to full-time RB are clearly from different planets.

Though his crossing isn't always the best it isn't terrible either. The Fulham game early in the season was a good performance at RB with 2 assists and it was his cross on matchday 38 agaisnt Sunderland. He needs to better his game and aspects of his game, crossing being one of them.
I do remember the Sunderland one, but if you kick the ball across the box enough it is bound to go right sometime.

I think Rafael is our starting right back next season. Once he gets a few games behind him he is unbelievable.

Absolutely love the guy but his crossing is woeful, after the first time you see him mess up a cross you notice it every time (and it is every time that he messes it up)

He is a squad player for now, he is going to have to play wherever he is needed. Carling cup CB, Defensive sub the add height at RB and possibly a few three man midfields in European compotitions.

He is not good enough to be anywhere near the team in any position, that's ok though, he is 19-20, we can't force it, we need him to fight his way into the team.

Should he be played as a RB next season? Kepp him at right back and stop moving him all over the place. Give him time to adapt the RB role.

That is a very good question !

It's a real tough one to call and I am also a bit confused as to what would be the best position for Jones. He does have immense potential and power, but his passing needs to improve a bit for me if he was to play in midfield, his crossing and dribbling needs to improve if he was to play at right back, beacuse right backs nowadays also have to be good in attack. I guess ideally he would be a centre back, but we have a lot of competition in there, so it will be interesting to see how Fergie uses him.

This, But i honestly see him as a great midfield forcer, he has the steel to play that role, When we 1st signed him i was against the idea of making him into this type of player, but over the season, iv come to the conclusion that he could be that bit of steal we need in the middle of the park, Some training will be needed, but he cando it lol.

I believe he wants to play CB longer-term but not sure how much play time he'll get there. He's not a very good RB or CM to be honest; ok as cover but better to play him in his strongest position and where he want's to play (CB); though with four other CB's not sure how that will work.
