For me no competition, I would rather see United pick up the Charity Sheild than see all the home nations win the World Cup, Confederation Cup, Euro's or whatever for the next 100 years.
I've harped on about this a few times, International football is dead. Admit or not, but fans 'go with the flow' when it comes to it. The last International tournament that was played with any real passion, flair or attacking intent was the USA 94, ever since then the 'club game' has become too strong finiancially. Players, despite what they say don't give a toss about their national sides. Perhaps not every player, but as in all social phenemena there will be general trends and as far as professional footballers go that's it.
The fans aren't much better, and bar stating the obvious the English support England FC to be English, the Irish support Ireland FC to be Irish, American's support America FC and etc, etc, etc, but when the sides do poorly they are criticsed hysterically (see every competition England participated in post 1968). It should be the same for the fans as it is the players, it should be a honour to support your country, there should be no expectations and it should be primarily based on fun; which for a long time it hasn't been.
I'll admit my attitude towrads international football has been poor ever since I started working for them, but I can tell you that any cobnference or training session or workshops I've been too and the general view is the International game is in trouble.
Anyway, good luck to England FC tonight and hard luck too Ireland FC last night.
