Re: To dream the impossible dream, well almost impossible!

We dont need Rodriguez as Nani is staying put.Modric is a must for us hope we sign him.Strootman could happen with Fletcher struggling who knows when he will be back we dont really have a box to box midfielder like Fletcher is know what i mean.Anyway this would be my line up next season. With Owen gone and Berbatov looking very likely to go aswel we may need another striker but i would be well happy with this line up for the start of next season De Gea Rafael Vidic Jones Evra/Baines Carrick Modric Valencia Rooney Young Hernandez Subs Lindegaard Welbeck Smalling Cleverley Anderson Nani Kagawa I think that is a brilliant line up

This would be asking an awful lot of United to cough up for these players but where it seems impossible at first, its not actually out of our hands imo. With Kagawa and Powell wrapped up, focus seems to be on the CM next with Modric, despite not being the holding player we all seem to be crying out for, he's a fantastic player non the less. Speculation also seem's to deem us as suitors for PSV's enforcer Kevin Strootman, whose been likened to Dutch Captain Van Bommel. Also for a while now we've seen links drawn to ourselves for young talented Porto winger/forward James Rodriguez. I dare anyone to dream of United fending strong European competition off and making a clean sweep for the 3 of them. Along with seeing Nani pledge his future to the club in the coming weeks. If you can still believe it then see what you think of a possible United starting 11 for 12/13
what do you think we dowith the rest of the team,if players like this is are startin eleven, reckon we'd need a bigger bench...

Carrick stays back too often with Scholes as Scholes doesn't have the legs to cover for Carrick and Carrick can't be a one-man cover since Scholes doesn't have the legs to come back in time.
Scholes and Carrick invited way too much pressure last year, was the first time I've seen United play with so little determination and guile to get the ball back. But it was to be expected - neither are ball winners, Carrick reads the play more and tends to be a more "in the right place" kind of midfielder breaking up the play and although he can occasionaly stick in a decent tackle, he isn't that kind of player and shouldn't really be relied upon to do so. And well, need I go into Scholes and the topic of tackling lol! It's clear we need a ball winner in there somewhere, love Fletch in there but still too many question marks over his return, doesn't need to be one of the obvious names or even a high profile signing, just SOMEBODY!

Literally no home grown players, few English players. Sure is a ***team.
    City bought the title
City have ruined football with the money
    City are the devil

We need to buy Falcao Lucas and Modric though

And whoever we get won't be a Tiote type, it doesn't fit Sir Alex's style, thankfully.
Well, Tiote can pass the ball and is more than just an out-and-out enforcer, so he isn't what Sir Alex doesn't want. Anyways, all we need is that kind of a player who can free up either Scholes, Carrick, Cleverley, or Anderson (whoever he is partnered with). Carrick stays back too often with Scholes as Scholes doesn't have the legs to cover for Carrick and Carrick can't be a one-man cover since Scholes doesn't have the legs to come back in time.

Oh yes we're going to replace 4 of the 5 starting midfielders at once.
Don't think anyone genuinely believes this is going to happen mate it's a bit of banter with a hint of "it's not too far from possible" thrown in. With Scholes and Carrick far from done in the squad it will be difficult to see anyone come in and push them out on a permanent basis, but fact is they will need replacing in the not too distant future (next summer for Scholesy) so why not get their replacements in now and blood them into the squad whilst also being more than capable of covering 1st team action when and if required?

Got to admit that is one hell of a squad though!

Didn't we just sign Powell? Carrick has 2-3 seasons left in him, Cleverley is also here. We don't need two midfielders, one surely, but not two.
Powell is in the attacking bracket and is surely not going to be a regular for a good couple of seasons at least, and unless SAF has visions of turning him into a box-to-box player he is most definitely not a CM replacement.

Carrick will begin to be phased out of the line up in the coming seasons also, therefore a replacement of a youthful age will be great to have in the team now. His place will eventually be taken by the "enforcer" in the squad I reckon, with a Modric kind of player taking over from Scholes. It makes sense, a younger addition to be more of a back up to Carrick initially who we reckon has only 2-3 years left giving the new lad time to blood and learn his trade, while Carrick holds the position in the mean time. Then someone of a more expereineced age to take over from Scholes who undoubtably is in his very final year and will not play every game.

Powell is a Gerrard, you can play him in the AM role, but his best will be as a creative midfielder. IfPogba was meant to be a regular in a season's time, then sure as hell Powell, who at least played senior football, will be a regular in a season's time as well. And until then,we have Scholes. We're not going to sign an out and out enforcer as long as Sir Alex is around.
That's what I'm saying mate, you seem to be disagreeing with me on ponts we agree! Noway will SAF throw him in straight away, maybe the odd appearance but nobody expects him to take a first team position for his debut season. And to say he has had senior football is a little OTT considering it was league 2 mate not the highest standard but do get what you mean. I don't think Pogba would have been a guranteed starter this year if he were to have stayed either. In and around the first team set up with sub apps and occasional starts against lower opposition is the way I saw it for Pog and no doubt the same for Powell if he isn't going on loan.

You genuinely not think we will see a more powerful CM come in this close season? We risk being too lightweight and not addressing one of our downfalls last term if not. I'm not suggesting an out and out DM for one minute but someone to command the centre of the pitch sticking in a boot whilst also being comfortable to go forward and have an eye for a pass. Scholes and Carrick for all their good points simply can not fit these requirements against such players as Toure and were even dominated by Tiote and co, too many times we saw that last year.

Not exactly, I'm saying he can get cup games and subs for a season and more the season after. He's not two or more seasons away from being a regular, just like Pogba wasn't. And league two is indeed senior football, a lot higher than reserves level that's for sure. No, I'm convinced we will get another CM, but I'm certain we won't get two as we already got one in Powell and we have Carrick, Scholes and Cleverley. We don't need more than 4 and a back up for two positions. And whoever we get won't be a Tiote type, it doesn't fit Sir Alex's style, thankfully.

I think its safe to say the way the teams headed is 4-2-3-1 To play that effectively you dont have to look further than Real. 4-2-3-1 has been effective for them because they play a creative and defensive CM, then 3 attacking midfielders, non of which tend to be set as out and out wingers but obviously they are capable of playing crosses into the box. I think to consider us as effective users of a similar system the key stone is us signing a holding player, whoever that may be, your more than aware of the names that have been thrown about. Modric and Rodriguez would just be luxury buys tbh, to take the real point out of the post, which was obviously the dream part you could set a team up like this and we'd still mount a good challenge domestically but I dont think this side would make as much of a dent in Europe as my 'dream team' would
Don't get me wrong, I agree with the concept of a 4231. I agree that we should be after a holding midfielder, but I wouldn't agree on him starting along side Carrick as that will be a bit too defensive for my liking. Strootman and Carrick are very similar as well. Then I'd rather have Rooney in the attacking midfield three. Something like this in other words: Hopefully our next, and only signings, are a holding midfielder and a left back.
