With people suggesting various left backs as a replacement for Evra, competition with Evra or a youngster to take over from Evra, is the signing of Kagawa an indirect way of keeping Rooney on his toes.
For a good number of years now, if Rooney has been fit, he has played. There has never really been any competition for him for that "in the hole" role, could the signing of Kagawa be this competition?
Its no secret, over the last couple of years Rooney has gone through a few spells of playing quite poorly, yet often remained in the 1st team. Its always been a case of playing his way back into form. SAF was also slightly critical of him at times last season for taking his foot off the pedal.
Depending on the form of Kagawa when he does play in the hole, could it be possible that Rooney would no longer be one of the 1st names on the teamsheet?
Will Rooney need to up his game to keep his place? Or will it a case of fitting Kagawa in around Rooney?
*Not suggesting one way or another, just asking questions.
