Rob4united, I completely agree. The difference with Rooney today is that he has added to his game (tracking, defending and passing) and he has also dropped most of his hot-headed ness.

It is certainly not fair to assess Rooney when he plays for England. He is surrounded by players that are not of the quality needed to play alongside him (e.g. Milner, Barry, Carroll). These players are going to make anyone look bad.

Rooney will probably never be able to deliver on the international stage because the squad in general will never be good enough. Also, as with most PL players, he has bigger competitions to fight for during the season.

Great players can unshackle themselves from the low expectations of a dismal team and can be their driving force and inspiration. this Rooney, who seems more sluggish than the Rooney of old and can barely beat a defender can't do that. Anyway with the new additions this summer we'll see what he can do with an accomplished midfield feeding the front-men.

When he came to MU, Rooney was a very good player with loads of potential. Now he's a very good player, probably the same level he was before, but this is as good as he gets.

people are free to believe whatever they want to believe. if you want convert the the religion of wayne roonism then there is probably no one to stop you. But once you watch the performances long enough everyone will grow to realise certain things. Is wayne rooney world class or is he merely the only english footballer who actually has some technique and tactical intelligence?

Re: Waynes World - better than great!

Although I agree with the stuff o.p. mentioned but there are still few things i fill mature Rooney has lost. He is not aggressive as he used to. I do not know the exact reason, but I assume his temperament went with it. I feel like he has lost hunger or desire to play. I cant remember a single game where he played with fire in belly. People will disagree with me because their argument might be he is playing much deeper role, play making role, where he is more influential and dictates the game a lot. Maybe, but he does not perform much enough there too, look a tour midfield frailty this season. Could not compete in Europe at all. And, i hate how he has stopped trying long shots. This guy was a gem when it came to long shots and when you play a deeper role, why not go time to time. Player with his quality should score scorchers more often but I guess he likes to play safe. In my reckoning, i think he has become more mature than he needs to be, I wish he was a bit more self fish at times. Anyways, I think being more selfish will do him a lot good. Moreover, i think he has lost a little bit of flair too. Does not fancy himself a lot these days. Tactically and technically i think he is one of the top players, probably the best right now. But, he plays very secure these days.No guts no glory. Risk it and you will never know what will happen. That is how i feel about him. No bashing, however a constructive argument is welcome

    Hi Guys,

Wanted to wait a few days after Englands demolishing to ask this. Been seeing a lot of comments around the forum suggesting that Rooney isn't world class, is past it/lost a yard, isn't as hungry anymore and never produces for his country. This seems to have evolved to a few (no doubt loyal fans with footballing knowledge) suggesting that he's not the same player anymore and that a potential swap deal with Real Madrid's over stock could be a good bit of buisness as he's not the same Wayne that burst onto the scene as a 17 year old at the Euro 2004.

I agree, I think he is a different player. The Wayne that cost us 26 million from Everton all those years ago would now cost at least 60 million, given todays market.

All along his United career his biggest critcism has been he doesn't score enough goals consistently. And as Fergie argued he will get that consistency to his game and will stop scoring in 'bursts'. We are starting to see a more disciplined Rooney, aware of hsi responsibility to the team. As a goal scorer and talisman for one of teh biggest clubs in the wolrd what we need from Wazza is a player capable of finishing off moves and leading the line.

I catagorically reject claims that he isn't as aggressive, or as technically gifted as he once was. A certain over head winner will quash that. His array of passing has improved and the amount of distance the player covered has increased (slightly) the past few seasons. He doesn't beat as many or go on as many runs no doubt but that isn't because he can't; it's because that's the wingers job and he has been asked to stay up top (by Fergie) and be the striker we need him to be.

This 'rubbish' or 'opinions' about Rooney's quality or levels of performance are a backlash from peoples disappointment at the Euro 2012 and nothing more, despite what you may claim. Rooney is world class and is such an instrumental player for Manchester United, in terms of not only his output in pure goals and assists not counting kep passes, interceptions and runs made but his level committment and playing style. Each player whether it be Messi or Ronaldo perform certain roles and duties for each team. Ronaldo has a role at Madrid just like Messi does for Barcelona, they don't get critcised for performing their roles at their clubs and I don't see why Rooney should be critcised for his.

People may suggest that they score more goals or perform more exciting tasks, again this is your opinion, but very much determined by the characteristics of those players being asked to play to their strengths. At each of those teams they play to said players strengths and are significantly weakened, more so than when we don't have Rooney. I have a lot of confidence in the lad and make no execuse for my bias towards him. He doesn't play for England how he plays for us simply because he's asked to play different roles, just as Messi (another world class player) doesn't replicate his club form for Argentina.

Quite simply, I find some opinions a little outrageous and severley doubt that anyone who believes that Rooney has deterioted in any respects can provide any sort of evidence of such. Furthermore, I think this may be an interesting opportunity for people to highlight themselves as those who believe a young Rooney is better than the current Rooney and to give a reason for or vice versa.

I'll go first, I think our current Rooney is better simply because he score more goals whilst still being able to provide moments of magic.

I agree 100%. He is the most complete player in the world . he can play in any position we put him in. Last season he played on left once or twice. Played in CM a couple of times. Score a good number of goals. What more do you want. There isn't a player in the world that can play in as many positions as he can. He played so many games this past season that it is no surprise he looked so tired at the euros. The guy needs a break. That's why I think we got kagawa as well so Rooney can have a break every now and then. Also England play boring stiff football which doesn't match rooneys style. Nice positive post bud.

Thanks mate, and what you added was spot on. He is the most complete player on the planet. I hope he finishes his career here.

I rate he will finish here

Absolutely mate, the England side is poor. You can't expect Rooney to perform for England the same as he does for United. Germany went out last night (convincely) to Italy and you don't see a mass assisted suicide aimed at Ozil. You can't judge a player over one season (even two) and a lot of 'fans' have doe that in less time over Rooney.

I haven't seen one half decent post regarding a Rooney critcism and that thread 'Rooney execuse' is pathetic. I want to see the doubters make themselves known in this thread so we can highlight them for the forth coming season. Might have to go looking for them.

Re: Waynes World - better than great!

Hmm very diffecult question actually. My concern about present Rooney is that he often tries to do things that hinders him in doing what he is best at. To me he tends to drop deep too much. He is not the world class playmaker that he seem to believe he should try to be. He can't take the ball forward himself, so 90% of the times that he does drop deep he recieves the ball and passes it back. Thats all good, but I would rather that he had concentrated on moving into the right positions further up field, making runs at the oppositions defence etc. etc. This is what he is world class at (or used to be in his younger days) and what he should be using his energy on......................... Im sure he is a better player today, but to me he seemed more dangerous a few years ago, and he seemed more settled with the role he played in our team.

i agree with you he's better in every aspect of his game than he was when he was 18 or 20... the only thing i would have a pickle at is i don't really see him running at players and embaressing them. as he did in the past, thing is though bar entertainment purposes is that really that important?

i think its rather laughable to expect so much from him when you consider the way england play defend all game lob it up front and consistently fail at simple 5 yard passes..i'm not even going to talk about service...point is england footbal team played liked trash not wayne rooney.

i honestly think he is the best striker in the world and the complete modern day striker, in that he can do every role as well as drop back in to midfield and boss a game

every manager and team in the world would want this player if made availiable he would get in to any team no question because managers would make the space
