We truly do need more pace & attacking mindset in our midfield, I agree. Carrick is too defensive-minded in my opinion, so I'd rather have a player like Kaka in my midfield, but the issue is injury. Were Cleverley to stay healthy for a reasonable chunk of the season, I'm sure you'd change your mind about his potential to become a top-class player. Fletcher has been ill for a while, & whenever he has played he's been immense in our midfield, & I'm sure any team would be thankful to have a player of his stature. I'm also a bit skeptical of your decision to rank Berbatov above Van Persie, who's never failed to prove that he's an outstanding striker. Van Persie would form a great partnership with Rooney I'd like to believe, plus we do need some left-footed players in our team who are willing to take shots. You also can't seriously be willing to miss out on Van Persie for the sake of our younger players' developments – that's absurd. Surely you don't expect Danny or Chicha to be daring or experienced enough to really trouble top class defenses such as Barcelona's or Madrid's in the 2012/13 season do you? Not to mention our real problem last season was goalscoring, not our midfield. Losing the league on goal difference would probably imply we need some more power going forward, so I'd suggest we sign another quick, skillful, attacking midfielder, as well as RvP if we are to return as the dominant force in England, as well as the kings of Europe.

It's not so much the quality it's the quantity. It's been said to death but we have no cover for carrick and considering the amount of games we'll play and the unlikelihood that carrick we'll stay injury free, it's frankly suicide to be going in the season with only anderson, carrick, scholes, giggs and cleverly to play centrally. Of course we'll probably play jones there who will butcher the job(no fault of his own) but for a top side such as united it's frankly not good enough and it's counter productive to jones development to have him playing all over shop. I don't count powell and tunnicliffe as they're not ready to be mainstays. Both scholes and Giggs should of had the decency to quit instead embarrassing themselves by becoming liabilities each time they step on to the pitch.

Same midfielders who have won us trophies...

No team doesn't have a game or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 during the season where they are not at their best with sharpness, intensity, creativity missing. It happens to all teams. So you pick out a game where United struggled to break Blackburn down, but still won which is what good teams do, and ignore games like the 8-2 where we sliced through Arsenal? Guess who was in the middle that day?

You talk about stunting the development of Chicharito and Welbs if we bring RVP in, but apparently it's ok to do that in the midfield when we have promising young players like Cleverley, Anderson, Powell, Tunnicliffe etc.

    skengman:
Why do our centre mids only play useless 5 yard passes to eachother or spread it wide to the flanks?

Considering United are more direct than teams like Barca, who play plenty more 'useless' 5 yard passes to each other. It would seem by your logic they are even worse yet you suggest otherwise later in your post. It looks to me like you don't quite understand all the different roles players employ, hence the slating of players like Carrick and Park Ji Sung.. However, they are very important roles and vital to a succesful and balanced squad. I would recommend being more objective, watching plenty of football and quite closely while you're at it, as well as studying the game more and then you will possibly understand it better. Have a nice day :)

    THIS!, exactly right.

Well what trophys did them players win us last season? The last few seasons before that we only won stuff because Scholes and Giggs were slightly younger, Carrick was abit more mobile than he is now, Fletcher was fit and Anderson was showing signs of Flair but where has all that gone now ey? Before then we won things because of Ronaldo. We had Tevez as back up for Waza and Hargreaves played a vital roll in midfield. (Thank him for our 2008 Champions League campaign) Ferdinand was younger and more fit before his dodgy back problems & Evra was less lazy at getting back to defend. Plus we had Van Der Sar. Need i say more? Yeah we only just scraped victory vs Blackburn but it was an eye sore to watch for 90mins. It would be fine if that was just one of them so called "One off fixtures" which every team goes through when they play poor and lack creativity but we had too many of these sorta fixtures last season. Winning by lucky 1-0 margains against teams we used to smash 3 or 4 nil a few seasons ago. And the finger has to be pointed mostly at our midfield. Im sorry but its just so painfully obvious at our lack of quality through the centre and that the young midfielders you call promising like Tunicliffe and Cleverly are not as promising as youngsters like Wilshere, Ramsey, Rodwell, Bale etc. Welbeck aint as promising as Sturridge but I'm not gonna get into upfront because midfield is what needs addressing in our team regardless of what you say. Barca's 5 yard passes actually get them somewhere where as ours don't against better opposition as shown in the 2 UCL finals they destroyed us in.

We need someone who isn't afraid to actually run with the ball and create something every now and then. Our system sometimes works against lesser teams but we are becoming way too predictable (Blackburn Away last season is a prime example.) As much as i love Scholes i think the fact we had to ask a 37 year old to come out of retirement speaks volumes about how poor our midfield really is and how poor we really are financially. People on this forum are still deluded into thinking we are still one the best clubs in the world. Really? Would players like Cleverly, Park Sung (I'm glad he's gone), Anderson, Carrick & Fletcher ever get anywhere near the Barca, Madrid, Chelsea or City starting 11? No! Clubs like them wouldn't touch players like that with a bargepole or they would be bench warmers at best. All these RVP stories annoy me because a 29 year old injury prone striker is not what we so desperatly need right now, Why does everyone try and take the attention away from our biggest issue? All RVP would do is stunt the development of Welbeck and Hernandez plus he only has a year or 2 at the highest level left. Keep king Berb and our strike force is fine. Lets not waste £25m on another foward we don't need. Instead please sign another decent midfielder for goodness sake Fergie! Scholes and Giggs can't go on forever
To be fair to anderson and cleverley. They arent afraid to carry the balll forward. The only problem for ando is his weight, injuries and his decison making. And for cleverley, its his injury record.Kagawa was a good start. Lets hope there is another central midfielder being lined up
To be fair I've been watching Team GB play lately and Ramsey looks twice as mobile and creatvie than Cleverly is. And he's had just as many injurys as Cleverly (probably more 1 including a broken leg) and he still outshines Cleverly. Injurys are not always an excuss for a players sheer averageness. Anderson isn't even worth speaking about and hopefully you will be right about Kagawa.
