    Re: It's NOT Man-U!!!!!!!!! For Pete's Sake!!!!

"After the Munich disaster the name 'Man - U' was disgustingly used by Leeds and Liverpool fans to insult Manchester United FC and their fans. Since then the term has become deragatory to our organization and synonymous with insults aimed at us after the tragedy. While rival fans will always be rivals we feel that neutrals including media companies should recognize the history associated with the term. The Munich disaster is not all about Manchester United but it affected several people in the footballing community, families and members of the general public. We feel a term that serves to insult all those people is just not right and it is up to you to help us let everyone know exactly what it means."

This is the copy from another website. Do you think this is the answer to your question? I hope it is.

    Ashwath:

I still hope for answer to this.

All any one does is repeating the same story about the origin of "Man -" being song to disrespect Munich. But it CANNOT BE TRUE as a longtime before 1958 newpapers called us "Man -." on fixture lists and tables!! So “Man -” was NOT invented as a insult to Munich by rival fans.

So why is this story told all the time and fans put down other fans who say it? I am fan for long time and all this story only started on internet I think! Now all people repeat the story and think it is true.

But if it is true, why can noone say:

Who started the ban and when did it start?
How could "Man -." be started as a disrespecting name by rival fans after 1958 if we are called "Man-." in newpapers long before!!

Guys, why are you surprised? He is doing that in every sticky forum on this site. Check it (Latest news forum - Talking reds user guide for example). I'm reported abuse, maybe mods doing their job?

Correction: That is not cohen, that's footiedude. However, cohen's post doesn't belong here.

    Re: It's NOT Man-U!!!!!!!!! For Pete's Sake!!!!

The story about the start of term "Man -" looks like URBAN MYTH.

All any one does is repeating the same story about the songs. But the story that the "Man -" started as a term of abuse in the songs IS NOT TRUE.

BEFORE 1950s newpapers shortened Manchester United on team, fixtures and tables to "Man -." !!

So “Man -” was NOT invented as a term of insult by rival fans. Now the urban myth is a way for some fans to put down other fans like a secret code!!

    4 Questions:

    Who started the ban?
    When did it start?
Why is it different (less mad) than the church banning “christ” as short for jesus christ because other people later on use it as abuse or swear word?
How could "Man -." be common as shorter name for Manchester United in newpapers before 1950s if it was started by rival fans as an insult after 1958?!!

    Re: It's NOT Man-U!!!!!!!!! For Pete's Sake!!!!

For the people who upon reading this thread are still insistent on using the term Man *, its a derogatory term. Kinda like how some black people refer to themselves as N****R, they are ignorantly using the term and are disrespecting those who had to suffer abuse in the past. Its the same as using the term Man *. If you want to shorten it just use MU, it is accepted.

What I wanted to know is why the thread title and even the song/chant the term "Man U" is changed to "Man Utd"?

Wow... after a long post and numerous editing, I've realised that the forum automatically changes the term "Man U" into Man Utd.

So for those who are refering to the term Man "U" for reasons of educating fellow forum members, you can't use "Man U", you'll need to find a way like I have so that the forum doesn't auto mod it. Otherwise it leads to confusion and it appear as though the term "Man Utd" is frowned upon.

One last point, its all well and good telling newbies and kids on here that you shouldn't use the term Man "U", but you can do more, next time you hear pundits, commentators and news reporters refer to us as Man "U", then write an email/letter of complaint detailing why you find it offensive. Hopefully, you'll educate them, who via their medium, will educate a lot more people than just those you're trying to influence here.

I apologise to those who are offended by my using Man U, I'm merely using it to display what not to use.

Answer to all those who dont agree with the point of this thread...

The ties and background of this term has been clearly explained and the obvious conclusion thereof is of an unethical nature...so..

Us  e it dont use it...your choice...

Keep his in mind though, if you do use this term you are entertaining and indirectly supporting  those pathetic pillocks who use it to disgrace both those who died in that horrible crash and the history of this club.

    Manchester United

What an awesome and powerful name that is , a name worthy of its rich history which many supporters respect and celebrate religiously and without fail, the same supporters who frown at a secondary, uninfluential and weak manufactured name like man-u which was introduced by our rival supporters to try and rob this clubs name from its potency.

I'm in South Africa, been here for a week or so, spoken to many avid football supporters in different cities, many of whom are Manchester United supporters who watch every single match gathering in pubs by the hundreds to support this team when they play, those numbers apparently double when we play Chelsea, Liverpool , Arsenal or City. I visited a supporters club in Johannesburg where they were having a huge discussion about the transfers, especially the Owen signing, everywhere i looked i saw RED, everyone , from the geezers to the toddlers were dressed in Manchester Uniteds colors, there was a crowd singing in one corner ' His name is Wayne Rooney' .

The conversations i had with fellow supporters, when they heard i was from Manchester they couldnt stop talking about this great club, you would be shocked by how informed these people are about our club and its history!

I felt like a celebrity for a few hours , everyone sharing their stories about how they came to support Manchester United.

That was so fantastic, i never expected anything like it in South Africa ...absolutely fantastic!

I will definitely be making a point of visiting there again during the football season..

    And Guess what...

NOT ONCE DID I HEAR ANYONE REFER TO THIS CLUB AS MAN-U !!!!!!!

     Devil 4 Your Choice... Yes

    Love it.

    4-4-2:

    garp01us:

Personally I refer to our great club as "Manchester United," or "United."  It has become common place these days to butcher or short-cut the english language unfortunately, all to save what a few keystrokes or a breath or 2?. I can excuse the fans who donot know any better, and there are alot of them especially with the huge popularity United has gained in the last 3 seasons. However once a true fan is enlightened to the reasons why not to insult our club with the above mentioned term your either being lazy or your a fair-weather fan who loves the attention and success of our club but not actually the club itself. Just my 2 pence on the subject.

So when you refer to the club as "United" are you not saving a few keystrokes or a breath? Why post a self rightous boast only to contradict yourself.... You see when you refer to Manchester United as just United how do I know you do not mean LEEDS... NEWCASTLE... SHEFFIELD.. OXFORD.. HARTLEPOOL... WEST HAM.. BOSTON ....SOUTHEND...HEREFORD....SCUNTHORPE....PETERBOROUGH...SOUTHEND.....As for the stupid accusation of people being "fair weather fans"  do you not just love it when the sun is shining and Rooney sticks the ball in the back of the net??? Bring me sunshine bring me laughter........ because your post brought me laughter.

I think you have said some good points. But it is better we do not argue but to have the answer.

I read the historic description and I read the bad songs. But bad songs does not answer it. "christ" is used as a swear word but the church would not ban members saying it - it would MAKE it into a derogatory term when it was not before.

Man - was a short name name before the songs so why do we decide to make it "derogatory".

Who decided and when? (Like when news is put here and people ask 'SOURCE PLEASE'!)

If media used it as our short name before the song do we expect them to stop now because of the song?

    May be noone knows.
