First off it isn't FIFA that cast the vote on who wins. The people that cast their vote are National team managers and their captains that cast the vote. That means players and people involved in the game that cast the vote on who is to be FIFA Ballon d'Or winner. I think that they are more than qualified to cast their vote on who they think is the best player in the world.

Yes but people think fifa influences or corrupts there decisions.
Thats a ridiculous conspiracy theory. What does FIFA gain for from doing this. Nothing. Its one thing to suggest corruption in staging of World cup i.e. Russia and Qatar as it their are strange hosts; especially Qatar, who both have ultra rich shieks and Oligarchs involved in club football around europe spending vast amounts of money. Thats not a stretch of the imagination that they bribed voters with money. Whereas FIFA would have to bribe a lot of International managers and captains and at the same time keep it quiet. But what would they get out of this. Maybe they really like Messi so much they spend a fortune insuring he won the award. No logic in that.

How would Fifa rigging the ballon d'Or benefit them at all?

Ronaldo didnt vote because he isnt captain
    Out of interest, who is?

Personally I don't see the fuss about these awards, congratulations to Messi.

Bruno Alves, apparently. Dont know if that was contrived to get Ronaldo an extra vote (probably was).

But then Zanetti i assume voted for Messi and excluded Ronaldo.

Dont get the fuss either, to be honest.

So much for secret ballot. Isn't Ronaldo was Captain of Portugal. Its wrong in one way not to vote who you think is best. Messi could vote for himself. But should also vote who is thinks is in the top 3. What ever he thinks of Ronaldo he deserves to be seen as a top 3 player. Same for Casillas. Messi is at least a top 3 player.
Pretty sure you couldnt vote for yourself. And Ronaldo captain, probably is, but i assume they nominated Bruno Alves so Ronny could get another vote.
    eddie moroney:
Footballers/managers acknowledge great players and vote accordingly. Anything other than ability and performance is a distant 2nd.

You would think so, wouldnt you? Then how about Gerrards vote? Messi, Iniesta, Alonso. No Ronaldo in his top 3.

Some people will vote for who they want to win, and exclude players they dont want to win.

Messi pulled 41.6% of the votes from International managers and Captains which suggest that amongst the people involved in the game across the world he was definitely the best player in their mind. Ronaldo got 23.68% votes and Iniesta got 10.91%.

Safe to say the the majority of Managers and captains around the world saw Messi as the world player of the year. People that say Messi was robbed first need to become either an international captain of their country of Manager of their country in order to change it. But its those people that don't play the game let alone understand it.

On a technical note, 41.6 per cent is not a majority.

Where as i agree. Not ALL voted for the best player in the World. Ronaldo didnt vote because he isnt captain, Messi did and he didnt put Ronaldo in the top 3. Casillias voted without Messi in his top 3.

The Austria manager voted without either Messi or Ronaldo in his top 3.

Whereas the majority probably would have voted for Messi on performances alone, its also a popularity contest, and while Ronaldo is painted as the arrogant winker, Messi is painted as a saint.

As for voting being a popularity contest, I wouldn't think Managers and footballers pay much heed to that. They play the game and understand whats a good player and whats not. Footballers/managers acknowledge great players and vote accordingly. Anything other than ability and performance is a distant 2nd.
