No. Don’t worry about ‘Glory Seekers’. Get the bigger picture:
After Munich, sympathy for the terrible loss attracted new supporters, as did the brave fight back of Sir Matt, Jimmy Murphy and others who battled to keep the club going. United’s philosophy of playing with style reached a wider audience.
We cannot choose the fans we attract. It is better to be glad that we are attracting fans. For those that cannot remember, Liverpool had no problem attracting new fans during their glory days of the 70s and 80s.
As for fans wrecking United’s reputation. Painful to admit, but in the 1970s our ‘fans’ were often a disgrace to the name of Manchester United. Other clubs had their problems too, but the point I am making is that ‘Glory Seekers’ and damage to the reputation of our club needs some perspective.
Like it or not, continued success on the pitch is more dependent than ever before on financial revenue; this is why the biggest clubs are constantly looking to expand their fan base overseas. Do we want fans to buy the shirts of Real Madrid, or Chelsea, or any other club? I think not.
So different types of new fans will follow United for different reasons and at different times in our history. Rather than criticise the ‘Glory Seekers’ let’s try to use places like these forums to inform them about the clubs great history; welcome them and if they are keen to learn, then hopefully they’ll stay with us through the lean times as well.
