    Re: Legends Profile: Martin Buchan

Buchan nearly didn't play in that final, on the Monday before we had played West ham and lost 4-1, during the game Buchan tackled Trevor Brooking and opened up his knee ligaments, he even suggested to Docherty that he should be sent back to Manchester, the team stayed in London all week, Buchan didn't train at al, on the morning of the final Docherty asked him how he felt, Well Buchan played, afer five minutes he had a tussle with Tommy Smith, came through it OK, and gained confidencefrom it to play a Captains game.

Martin was also not your typical footballer of the day, he didn;t come from the stereotypical working class background which was the norm for most players, if he hadn't been spotted to be professional footballer, he could have used his acadenic qualifications to become a teacher.

He was also a bit of a rebel, refusing to hand his passport to the club for safe keeping, reasoning was he was an adult and wuite capable of looking after it himself, Once a report at the Cliff asked Martin for a quick word, Martin replied "Velocity" and carried on walking.

Martin Buchan wasn't yoru average footballer on or off the field

    Pepe Chareetur:

Memories of the 1979 FA Cup final still linger in my mind. There were about five minutes to play and Arsenal  was leading 2-0 only to see Manchester United equalise and eventually lose out to a last minute ( or was it last second ?) goal from Arsenal's Alan Sunderland. Frank Stapleton played for Arsenal and later on signed for Manchester United.

That’s right Pepe. Sammy McIlroy equalised for us. He got the ball close to the Arsenal goal and somehow kept weaving between their defenders and slotted the ball home. United joy! But we must have been as shocked as Arsenal because we didn’t settle and compose ourselves, and as you say, gave it away again at the last. But in truth Arsenal played better and deserved to win.

Nobody can dispute the enormous contribution that Manchester United's long-serving defender, Martin buchan, made to the club. Buchan had enjoyed a distinguished career as Aberdeen before he ventured south to Old Trafford. At, 20, he was made club captain Dons, and a year later he skippered the team to a Scottish Cup victory. He was voted Scottish Player of the Year in 1971 and earned the first of his 34 Scotland caps inn the same year. Towards the end oof 1971-1972 season, Aberdeen decided to cash in on their young captain by selling him to a top English club. Plenty were interested, and it came as a suprise when Buchan chose United over the more successful Liverpool and Leeds United of that time. A class center-back like Buchan was exactly what United needed, and he wasted no time in justifying the record £125,000 transfer fee that manager Frank O'Farrell paid.

United were in decline, with world-class players such as Charlton, Best and Law coming to the end of their careers playing alongside individuals who simply weren't of the same calibre. Six months after Buchan joined United, O'Farrell was sacked and Tommy Docherty brought in. United continued to slide and were relegated in 1974, but with Buchan newely installed as captain, they bounced back at the first attempt by winning the Second Division Championship in 1975.

After the adversity of his first two years at Old Trafford, the club's fortunes were improving and Buchan later described his years under Docherty as "the happiest days of my playing career".

United reached the FA Cup final in 1976, but Southampton , suprisingly, won with a single goal. A year later United reached the final again, against Liverpool, and with Buchan blotting out Kevin Keegan with a typically faultless performance, the Reds achieved a memorable 2-1 victory. Buchan also won the accolade of becoming the first post-war player to captain both a Scottish and English cup-winning team. With Liverpool dominant in the league, Buchan's honours were restricted to the cups, and he picked up another runners-up medal in the 1979 FA Cup final defeat at teh hands of Arsenal.

In the 80's, Buchan suffered badly from persistant injuries, and in 1983 he bowed out of Old Trafford to spend a short spell playing at Oldham, and an even shorter one managing Burnley before leaving the game. After his footballing career, Buchan worked for a sportswear company, promoting football boots, These days he works for the PFA in London

Ha made 455 appearences scoring only 4 goals one of which was a superb long drive which was very uncharacteristic.

    Nice post robi.

When United won that FA Cup in 1977, Martin Buchan gave commentator John Motson the chance for one of his most memorable lines. As Buchan began the climb at the old Wembley Motson added "How fitting that a man called Buchan should be first up the 39 steps”

Talking about the ' Legends' forum when was it that we had threads/blogs/profiles about a whole lot of legends such as Charlie Roberts, Jack Rowley,Billy Meredith, Dennis Viollet, Denis Law, Tony Dunne, Pat Crerand, Sammy McIlroy, Martin Buchan, Eric Cantona on the first page?

I must admit I knew nothing about Charlie Roberts but then, other than several other interesting facts, I learnt that he was the first Manchester United player to be capped by England. As for Martin Buchan I've watched him play many times for Manchester United. A great player and it was unfortunate that those days Manchester United were struggling and not really at their best. But the player in question is certainly a legend and robi did a good job once again.

Most of these players' profiles contain important information about the player concerned and will definitely please the readers.

I've written to the mods asking them to allocate more space/pages to the LEGENDS' forum because many of us wouldn't like these players' profiles to perish in their infancy. We want them here for others to enrich their knowledge about ' Les Legendes De Manchester United ' .

    Bravo encore monsieur robi.

    Cheers !
