Unlike the rest of our defence, Neville played awesome tonight, do you not think? Defended well and bombed forward in the second half in a manner that defied his age! His crosses created a goal and caused havoc in Moscow's area on numerous occasions - it was great to see him playing so well amidst so many of our players that underperformed :)
i see Neville as our best choice for the Right Back position. this is not only because his defensive skills are as good as anyone else challenging for the Right Back slot, but also because:
1. He is passionate. No matter what the circumstances, Neville always wears the United badge with pride. He hates losing, and is a great long time loyal servant of this club. Matches against rivals certainly bring out an extra something in him.
2. He is the club captain. Who better to lead the next generation of players out onto the pitch than the man who has been given the role of club captain??
3. He knows when to attack and when to defend. One big problem i have is seeing Wing Backs push too far forward, only to be outdone on the counter. Neville tends to stay back a little bit more than most, and this strengthens our defence when the opposition counterattack.
4. His experience is formidable. When we come up against either a rival or a club whose home ground presents a rather hostile atmosphere, it is very easy for a younger player to get caught up in the moment and make irrational decisions that may severely cost the team. someone like Neville who has seen it many times before is needed to overcome those situations. this season against Besiktas was a perfect example of why we need experience in hostile environments.
5. He can put a decent ball into the box. We've seen him place numerous dangerous balls into the opposition's penalty area these last few games, and as a defender, something like this is an added bonus. it also allows us to put an extra player into the box.
