its not American football players that get paid...its the baseball and basketball players that get paid. The thing with our football, its all performance based, so if you dont get the games, you dont get paid. Adding to that the overwhelming physical nature of the game, and the shortness of the average career(3-4 years), makes the majority of the league actually underpaid. Baseball on the other hand is freaking nuts! These guys, along with basketball, have guaranteed contracts. Here's a list of highest paid baseball players, as of 2008, so the #'s will only be higher. Remember, the conversion rate between the US and UK, so cut those #'s in half, and you have an idea of their salary in Pounds... yeah we say that footballers are overpaid (which imo they are).

but NBA and NFL stars get paid ridiculously high wages. i remember hearing a basketball player from the boston celtics gets paid 300k a week. now thats insane

I think this is one of the main problems with the mls they get one star player pay them what they like and the rest of the team are getting paid a lot less I remember reading that one of David Beckhams team mates cleans the houses swimming pools where DB bought his new large house as a second job because his football wage wasn't enough

 Untill the mls gets this sorted out I dont think they will have some really good competitive teams they got good players coming through but because the wages are so poor they all move abroad to get more money just think if that 5.5 million pounds for one player was used to make the rest of the players wages better, I am sure more and more better players would want to go to the mls plus if they also changed their league dates to be more inline with europe they would get many more as it wouldnt affect their internationl careers too much which as been proved with Beckham going on loan which I think he should never off done because he gets paid loads to pley for Galaxy but wanted to leave on loan and leave his team in the lurch, Beckham is only in America for the financial gain in my eyes

The MLS pays some ridiculous salaries. eg 15K base salary playing professional football in this day and age ?? Becks get 5.5 mil  as the highest paid.
