Should we go back playing the 4-3-3 formation?

Eventhough we haven't played using this formation in a while we clicked on Sunday.

Carrick,Anderson and Fletcher look like the best trio midfielders in the world, they totally dominated the mid,same as they did in the champions league semifinals against Arsenal(both legs).

If Berba played yesterday it would have been great.

Rooney Berba Valencia

Rooney can come attacking from the left taking shots,while Berba can be the targetman to supply the ball to Valencia Rooney and the midfielders.

In defence all Valencia and Rooney will do is close down the fullbacks which will make the opposition have no space.

We also need to start giving Rafael some time in the right back,so that we can be a very attacking team.

How much longer do we have to put up with appaling refereeing decisions deciding the outcome of games. I have lost count of the number of games I have watched in the past few months where appaling decisions have decided the outcome of the game. Yesterday during the goal that should never have been scored there were 3 decisions that went against us. First the tackle was fair and should not have been a free kick, 2nd Drogba fouled Brown, 3rd Drogba was offside. Rooney was clearly on side when he had a clear run on goal but was called offside, and Terry clearly fouled Valencia when he was through on goal. When are refs and officials going to be called to account just like any of us would be if we performed as poorly in our jobs!

yep another thread of what we should change or not, but seriously there is nothing wrong with our team. We have a good set of players who can do the job well and are highly dedicated to our team. In my opinion, the 4-4-2 formation doesn't cut it anymore. Here are the problems that we have:

a) To be honest, we don't have a great crosser except for giggs and valencia.

b) There is absolutely no threat in the air in the opposition box

c) We play a lot of long balls, keep it simple and play short low passes. some of our attacking players are short.

d) No will to win games ex. liverpool, sunderland

However to finish the puzzle, you need to have the missing piece. i think our missing piece is the 4-2-3-1 which would fit our team perfectly and for a long time.

Defence: there's no point in arguing in defence, although the fullbacks need to attack more and support the wingers more which i will explain on the wingers section.

Midfield: this is the area where most of our fans are concerned about. For me, I think we are very well equipped. Let's see who we have for main centre midfield: Fletcher, Carrick, Anderson, and soon Hargreaves. I decided not to add Scholes and Giggs because even though I respect them, they are not going to be at the club in about 2 years so we should always look towards the future. Fletcher is an absolute must in our team. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be where we are right now and that says a lot. Carrick tends to play long balls, but no many of our players reach it. To be honest, Carrick is not as good as other deep-lying playmakers such as Xabi alonso or pirlo. Anderson is a player I really like playing the simple way. Even though he is an attacking midfielder, which I hate the talent he has put to waste, he does do a fine job as box-to-box midfielder and if anderson has no problems playing there, fine by me. Hargreaves, when fit, is one of the best DM in the world, but the real question is- would he be as good as he was before? for my 4-2-3-1 formation, I would put fletcher and either Anderson or Hargreaves to partner fletcher depending on hargreaves's injury. Those two will be the real engine of our team, helping out defence and going foward as well.

Wings: For me, it hurts me to say it but our wingers doesn't contribute much, maybe not valencia. Yes even though there's hardly anyone in the box, our wingers do not give in quality crosses. For this reason, I believe that the wingers should play like a mix of RF/LF and RW/LW. Let's see who we have: Valencia, Nani, Park, Obertan, Tosic. Valencia is our best winger we have. He has everything except the fact that he doesn't have a left foot. In the modern game, being versatile is very important and confuses our opponents more when wingers exchange position. All our wingers should learn how to play on both sides depending on the different tactics SAF wants. Nani is a complicated player. Has talent, but has no experience. It is hard to give Nani a run of games, since the stakes are very high and we really need points. I'm not sure what to do with Nani. Park, injured, is a reliable player but he is no winger. He plays as a RAM or LAM where he plays at the RM or LM. He likes to give short passes with great movement and high football IQ. But the players have no faith in him and he doesn't really have the final touch. Obertan and Tosic are still raw and I haven't since a lot of games to judge them, so let's leave it like that. For my formation, I would play like a RF and LF because we do not have quality crossers and we don't have anyone in the box to hit it, so they should play the Barca style, cut in and shoot. I think we should play Valencia on the right and the left is for anyone really and that is a concern. For this formation to work i would like the fullback to be the ones to give in the crosses similar to how brazil does it.

AM: Simple, Rooney needs to play there. He can't be convinced to just stay in the box and he really want to be anywhere. So I would put him there

ST: I think this is the area where we need to buy someone or giving a natural striker like Macheda and Welbeck to prove themselves at an early age. I feel that Macheda will play there since he already looks comfortable playing with the 1st team and his link up play is brilliant. Berbatov is supposed to be a striker but he likes to assist more rather than score so he and Rooney needs to fight over the attacking midfield position unless berbatov gets that killer instinct and hunger to score.

Conclusion: the formation i would play in

Remember we want the best of the club as much as possible and it would be really sad if Man Utd don't win the league this season because I know we have the talent and mentality to win it. What if United does not win the EPL or CL this year?

Over the course of the season so far there have been those here posting that United will not win the EPL or CL this year. First off let me say that NO THEY HAVE NOT ALL BEEN MUPPETS, some have been very intelligent posters who backed up their statements with well reasoned posts (doesn't mean I agreed with them). But the question that I always ponder is "Ok, so what if that does happen, what if United does not win the EPL or CL this year, or worse what if United wins no trophies at all? What happens to you because of it"

Myself, I of course would be disappointed. Some of how I feel might be depend on how United plays the rest of the way, how we are elmiinated, who wins instead of us. Obviously, I would not stop being a supporter, nor am I going to through players or management under the proverbial bus (especially not when those same players and management have help us win in the past).

In the past we have endured long breaks between CL trophies. In the recent past we dealt with Chelsea winning the title twice in a row while Arsenal had won it the year before, so that was a three year break. Of course there was the 26 year wait between English league titles, that was brought to an end in 92/93 season.

I know this may seem odd to some, but for me sometimes it is the titles you don't win that make you appreciate the titles you do.

What about you? What happens to you if United does not win the EPL or CL title?

Valencia --- 2 --- football was invented in year of 1863 and somebody did a trick,first trick,rushed and kicked.so antonio Valencia is still there

Fletcher --- 9 man of the match. he dealt perfectly with best PL midfield

Anderson --- 8 --- it is hard to play and shut down Essien.he did it

Carrick--- 6.5 --- I call Carrick "so so" little bit of that little bit of this.so so

Giggs --- 4 --- absolutly illusional.lots of run and touches but useless.terrible desicion making.Giggs should play vs poor teams but not likes of chelsea.too too too old

Anyone noticed we have played Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool this season and we have scored 2 goals in those 3 matches. One goal was a penalty and the other an own goal. I know we can still win the league, and I expect to win the league and other trophies. Why are not scoring in the big matches???

Van der Sar- 7- some decent save but he didnt have much to do except the goal which he couldnt stop.

O'Shea- 5- was exposed a bit at times and showed a lack of flair.

Brown- 7- did well and protected the keeper well.

Evans- 9- handled Drogba very well and protected the goalkeeper brilliantly, very pleased and the perfect replacement for Ferdinand.

Evra- 8- his runs troubled Chelsea and he was soldi in defence.

Carrick- 5- panicked when put under pressure and didnt create much.

Anderson- 6- worked hard and did quite well defensively but didnt near the opponent area.

Fletcher- 9- closed down Chelsea well and was one of our best players. unlucky for the goal.

Valencia- 9- troubled Cole a lot and was excellent defensively and worked hard.

Rooney- 7- did well considering he was lone striker but didnt make as much as an impact, still did some good stuff and was unluky at times.

Giggs- 6- not bad, did some good stuff but wasnt that effective.

Owen- 5- didnt make an impact at all but he didnt have much time.

Obertan- 6- showed more trickery and could have been the difference if introduced earlier. not enough time though

i would have gave all chelsea players 6 or 7 except Carvalho and Terry, 8 and 9 respectively.
