DEFINITELY NOT UP TO MAN UTD STANDARD. Decent player ( a sub/team player in case of injury ). Apart that, a player for moderate success, not an Andy Cole by no means.
I'm sure you were'nt around at the time, so let me help you out here, 12 of Cole's 25 seasons long career ended with a goal per game ratio worse or identical to what 21 year old Welbeck has this season. Stick to what you know pal, which is probably not a lot.
Yeah, Andy's first full season at United (a title winning one) resulted in Cole scoring 13 goals in in 43 games. It is a slightly better ratio than Danny (by about 0.01), however it tells me that they are going down very similar paths. Let's just hope in 3 years time (based on 95-96 being part of the run up to 98-99) United are winning the treble to mark what I seem to be predicting as Sir Alex's retirement campaign. The 95-96 campaign truly was a turning point, a season which saw the end of experience and the introduction of kids. It hasn't been as clear cut this time around, but it is happening.
Time is on his side for a first season. For the good sake of United I hope he makes it , if SAF still has him in the starting eleven. This utd team is not as complete as that era where we could afford to give time to players. Now every teams are competitive and we play in Europe regularly.

I know a lot of fans who think hes good and others who feel he just isnt good enough. I am thinking for United,he is not good enough,he doesnt work all that hard off the ball,he has missed to many easy chances this season, and a lot of his passes end up getting intercepted. Yes he has scored some important goals this season, and for that Iam really greatfull, but I just dont see that United spark in him,Iknow he loves the club and its nothing personal because I like the guy,but I really think if we were to have had a better striker upfront with Rooney,we would have scored a lot more goals this season.

Rooney and Giggs have lots of passes intercepted too. I think he puts a lot into each game too. Not sure why you think he doesn't work hard. He can be a bit clumsy, but that is normal for someone who's body is still changing and growing. Finesse comes with age and experience. Even Messi wasn't always as good as he is now.

The only thing I'm interested in is that Welbeck keeps improving and so far he is making steady progression as each season he has improved upon his last. If he improves at this same rate into next season he'll probably be the second best English striker and by the season after that one of the top 5-10 strikers in the league. Obviously I don't expect it to be that simple, but stranger things happen.

It is funny that up until now, fans still don't know what role that Welbeck or Berbatov plays. We have moved away from fox inside the box era since VN departed, that the no. 9 is spending more time outside the box than inside. Welbeck plays this role better than Berba hence displaced him as the 1st choice partner with Rooney. As Welbeck improves his finishing I have no doubt his goal score will improve but unlikely to reach 20+, unless Rooney pass the PK duty to him.

If Welbeck isnt good enough now he certainly will be in the next few years. He is only 21 years old, playing his FIRST season for us,what the hell do you expect from him? Give him time,he will get better every season and score more.
    Don`t hate on my opinion!

    Re: Is Welbeck good enough?

Yes and No, Yes because he's a United lad and his heart and soul is in this club, hes a fans favourate because of the work rate he puts in for the club, and being 21 he does have room to improve. No because he's not that gifted in front of goal, he does seem more like a winger, like a young Henry. Having read the arguments about the returns of some of the worlds top strikers at 21, my argument against that is, how many of those players played for teams like United, teams with players like Scholes, Valencia, Rooney providing you with opportunities week in week out, I think you'll find that not many of them did. Pitch Wellbeck in a lesser club and I don't think he'd be getting bigged up as much as he does at OT. So yes I think he's good enough, just not good enough to be first choice United Striker on a regular basis yet

good player to have in the squad but looks a bit arkward at times and i wouldnt be confident of him scoring when he is one on one with the goalkeeper, just not a natural finisher but he still can cause problems for defenders.
