Weird question.
I think Welbeck had what can finally be called "a great game" on Sunday. For the most part I don't get him. Last year on loan 26 league appearances, 6 goals. This year 29 league appearances, 9 goals but he's an automatic starter. Decent player, maybe a very good player one day but not yet. People say "yeah, but we're winning with him playing" but I have to say "he's playing while we're winning but we're not winning because he's playing".
Chicharito has 25 league appearances this year and 10 goals which is a better return than Welbeck but neither are exactly setting the league on fire this year and we need them BOTH. In fact, it wouldn't have hurt to have created more competition for the spot by playing Berba more even though he's leaving.
The thing that stands out for me in our striker situation is SAF's man-management techniques. In the summer of 2010, he was all about Berba in the press, the summer tour, and the first half of the season. By January 2011 Berba was half in the wilderness and by the end of the season he was all the way in the wilderness and Chicharito was SAF's favorite in the press and in games.
This season, it's clearly Welbeck who's the golden boy and Chicharito is left to give interviews where he has to admit that he hasn't been as good this season as last. Sure Chicharito is getting the odd game and sub appearance but he's not "the man" this season. So what does this say for Chicharito next season? Can't SAF pump up more than one striker at a time?
