Horses for courses!! Michael Carrick is probably the second best (after Paul Scholes) at keeping the ball. Now whilst he won't set the heather alight, he will keep the ball when needed, dictate the tempo, and distribute from the back. Something none of the named squad members can do, but will no doubt need to be done at some point. ( We all know how Stevie G kept ball against France to run down the clock) This squad, is too old, with no match winners bar Rooney and Young. Arron Lennon should be in there ahead of all the wingers, even if not fully fit. Roy has picked people based on reputation, not on form or merit.....sounds very much like Capelo. Sadly this squad is wery wery weak.

Carrick is just another squad player! He does not bring anything else for a long season he can be useful to SAF, but at international level where world class players are needed he simply does not fit the bill. Simply not good enough as some of you have noticed during European matches. This is one of the reasons we are so average.

Roy Hogson isn't very different from Capello, and that's not exactly a good thing. I thought he would have offered something different but he's just shown that he doesn't have the b*lls to drop certain players. He's just another FA puppet.

To be fair, Capello did give an opportunity to many young players - Jones, Cleverley, Welbeck, Walker, Smalling, Sturridge, etc. On the main topic, Hodgson has picked a squad that only offers very limited options. The midfield looks extremely rigid and lacks creativity and speed.

I was just about to start a topic on the issue. For me, it is a totally illogical not to have a midfielder with Carrick's passing ability.

That said, he will be much fresher for us at the start of the season.
