GeorgeOsborne:Henderson on stand by is a massive kick in the face to Carrick I agree... but I can see why Hodgson has done it, Barry, Parker, Henderson, what do they give you in central midfield? energy, and Carrick doesn't have it... I think it just tells us the formation Hodgson is likely to play really, he's going to opt for maybe a 2 man midfield, one attacker, one defensive, so he will need high energy levels... in a three man midfield, with Carrick as the casual passer I would of expected to see him on the list.
Yet Carrick has proven himself to perform well in a 2-man midfield in the 2006 World Cup, when everyone loved his performance against Ecuador. I don't see how people say Carrick doesn't have energy. He shields the defence well when paired with proper central midfielders. I am surprised that Hodgson took him out given that him and Barry played the exact same roles for their respective clubs, with Carrick doing better. I still remember when Barry got screwed in a counterattack against Germany when Ozil brushed past him easily, and Barry couldn't catch up. How does he have the energy levels to play in central midfield, then, if Carrick doesn't?
