    Jack Ripper:
im not to worried about competion for the right back slot as id prefer some competition for Evra who just seems to be in cruise control at the moment knowing he cant be dropped.
Definatley agree that LB is the more problem area than RB is but clyne would be a very good addition to our team and for the type of money we will be paying its a bargain.

    2mil max. Why not?

If we are getting a left back, we are getting a left back, signing Clyne is unlikely to affect that considering he costs peanuts.

He is also a long term home grown player which can never hurt.
Smalling and Jones are home grown, really don't see the point in wasting up to 5 million on another player who wont improve what we already have.
I think your being a tad unfair to be honest, you have quoted one bit of jamesey's post and then interpreted it how you wanted. Clyne and rafael will both offer competition to eachother for the RB position and both have the potential to be top right backs so them both fighting over the position will only bring the best out in them and maximise there already high potential. I think we wont pay anywhere near 5mil on him if im being honest.
What was unfair about quoting that bit?, I didnt say a bad word about anything that Jamesey had posted. I was just pointing out that we already have two quality proven players that are home grown in that position. Rafael already has competition which is why both Smalling and Jones played more games, than him this season.
Smalling is decent @ right back, Jones is bad, can't dribble another player. Rio is end of carreer and Vidic struggle with his health a lot. This would leave you with Evans-Jones-Smalling for 2 positions which is not alot bearing in mind potential suspensions. Raphael is a nice prospect but is rather more wing back in my opinion. Clyne is a cheap fit with high potential and is home-grown which I find very important

Im not getting in to a debate about someone elses post i was just making a point that you picked up on one aspect of his post and seem not to take the rest of it in to account. Having another home grown player will be a nice thing for us to have and it never hurts to have more. We will buy clyne(if we do) because he has the potential to be a great RB for us and provide competition for rafael. Jones and smalling's future wont lie in that position, they will be Centre backs im sure of that. Clyne may not be any better than what we have now but he will improve drastically at such a young age and become regular first teamer for us.

We dont need clyne rafael is better we could do with cover and comp for evra at left back, rafael smalling jones can all play rb probably all better than clyne.

    Re: Clyne????

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are NOT natural right-backs. There best position is in the centre of defence and I think signing Clyne will force both Jones and Smalling to play more centrally when they want games.

    Re: Clyne????

As far as i'm aware he would cost no more than 2 mil in compo.

With Vidic coming back from a long term injury, Rio with permanent injury problems (not to mention getting on a bit) and Fabio (as well as possibly Fryers) going out on loan Clyne gives real competition for right back with better attacking play than Jones.

Clyne's contract is up, he is cheap, in one or two years Rio will leave and Jones and Smalling will be two of only four centre backs and will not be providing right back cover, luckily we will have had Clyne at the club for one/two seasons letting him settle in and improve both himself, through being here, as well as Rafael, though giving him competition at right back.

Our right back and centre back positions will be adequately covered with settled in players all in their natural positions

    Re: Clyne????

He would defo be worth the investment and he would not cos us even half the 5 mil u stated his contract is ending so would go to a tribunal and would be between something.like 300k - 1.5 mil I reckon

    Re: Clyne????

I think the best thing he would offer is *permanent* competition at right back, him and Rafael are the same age and would give each other direct competition for the role long after Smalling and Jones are permanently redirected to centre back. Hopefully a kick up the backside for Rafael to get back to top form.

He is also a long term home gorwn player which can never hurt.

    Clyne????

Is this guy really good enough for United, I have seen nothing of him so just asking for opinions. What would he offer to United that we dont already have, e.g 4 players who can play right back Rafael, Fabio Smalling and Jones. Is he really better than any of them?
