Who cares what number shirt they will wear?! What possible difference could that make? Absolutely none. Do you think Ronaldo was a great player because he wore number 7? Or perhaps it was because he worked hard and trained well when he was younger, and his training and match performance actually yielded the results, rather than a number on his back. What about Vidic though? He wears number 15, but wait, that isn't a first-team defenders number? How can he be a good player? Really the most pointless debate of all the ridiculous topics on here.
You obviously know nothing about football. about tradition. about history. about Manchester United. I would be surprised if you one day said that football was pointless and that you don't get the logic behind 22 men chasing one small round thing on that green grassy thing. The no. 7 jersey is part of our tradition and history and the men who have previously worn it have made it more important than all our other squad numbers. I'm dismayed to have to educate you on this.
Yeah, I "obviously" know nothing about football. It's the typical view of the football terrace moron that you think yourself superior to another person because they fail to see how the significance of a number on the back of someone's shirt makes a blind bit of difference. It's the same pathetic argument that people like you sling around when someone has a different view to you when you say "But how many matches have you ever been to?" in response to any comment.

Yes, the number 7 has had a few good players wear it in the past, but it did not, in any way, shape or form, contribute to the standard or quality of their play. It is not in any imaginable way more important than any other number on the backs of any other player. What is important, and the absolutely unquestionable singular importance is how well the wearer of said shirt plays. Ronaldo would have been as great a player if he'd worn any other number, as would Cantona or Best. It makes no difference whatsoever except to materialistic bandwagoners such as yourself.

Case in point, by the way, that you think you know it all about football: you highlight the number 7 jersey as the most important, however, if we were being sentimental and traditionalist I would strongly suggest that the number 11 were to be the most significant - due to the fact that the most highly decorated player in the history of English football, who also happens to be the player with the most appearances for Manchester United wears it.

sorry mate but ur abit right and a bit wrong here.. yes logically the number is just a number and it is always down to the player to be his best.. but wat the previous guy was saying here is that based on tradition and the players who worn the 7 jersey are almost all Legends.. Ronaldo, Eric cantona, David Beckham, Christiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson and George Best, Bryan Robson.... this isnt coincidental.. these players earned to wear the number 7 and thats what TRADITION means..

got to say i disagree with Pijo. i think that having the number seven is extremely important in our club. and hopefully gives the basis for a player to succeed here. obviously there is no "scientific" reason.
but i just think that the faith given to such player wearing that number would be a huge boost to their confidence. anyway. i wouldn't mind giving it to Powell as he's going to be here for a while.
but, hopefully he's not wearing it in the reserves!

You're insane. I would recommend not bigging Powell up too much he is not a starter he is a player with potential, may be great in the future but anyone expecting him to light up the EPL next season is delusional seriously. A reserve player with the no 7. shirt now I've heard it all.

Us old timers care, lol. I've been a football supporter 40years when every game you had numbers 1-11 on the pitch with number 12 the substitute, these things stay with you. It's getting ridiculous now with players wearing numbers like 99. WTF is that all about?
    hahahahahaha,here,here!!
Hey Jasper, you skiving off work again? You want to be careful or all the dippers will be stealing all the half empty bottles from your bins.

All the Irish knew with this team they wouldn't be going far, how trapattoni thought he could play so high up against the Spanish i'll never know, but there you go. They did well just to qualify, the supporters were fantastic and it was great to see them mixing with the Spanish, had a few pints in the pub nothing heavy, getting too old for that *** man lol. Tonight i'll be cheering on The Lions. England won't win it but might go further than people think.
haha, never too old mate,if england cant beat sweden they can forget it,they may reach the semis otherwise imo, been watchin skysports news and it looks like it gonna kick off there any minute, looks a tense standoff between fans, here we go again..
Hardly win anything but with the best hooligans in the world, that's the fame that always follows England. What's going to happen if England meet up with Holland, Germany, Italians or the Russians? Fireworks for sure.

I'm with you mate..disagree with ridiculous numbers wear by players like the way they practice in serie A.but for me the number 7 is a very special number in United as the number wore by Best,Becks,Ronaldo before. The player that will carry the number will also carry a heavy expectation. Its include numbers 9,10,11

Haha good old robinho and i think ronaldinho at one point had the number 90 although i might be wrong.
I think the worst example of this that I ever saw was Ivan Zamorano for Inter Milan after they signed Ronaldo. He gave up the number 9 shirt for Ronaldo (for sponsorship reasons or something) and took number 18 for himself, but insisted on a little + sign being placed between the 1 and the 8 on his shirt. http://realsoccerfacts.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/do-you-know-why-ivan-zamorano-wore-18.html

Think Ronaldinho played with the number 80, something to do with the year he was born. I remember a year or two ago England played a friendly with the players wearing numbers 1-11. Might not mean a lot too a lot of people but i thought it was fantastic. No one getting ridiculous numbers.

It doesn't seem right to me that in the Euro cup that Henderson is wearing the number 8 and Parker the number 17, the same as Carroll wearing the number 9 and Welbeck wearing the 22 when almost everyone knew that Parker and Welbeck would be definate starters. For me the number 9 is another iconic number and i think it's embarrassing that Carroll got it.
