Oh yes we're going to replace 4 of the 5 starting midfielders at once.
Don't think anyone genuinely believes this is going to happen mate it's a bit of banter with a hint of "it's not too far from possible" thrown in. With Scholes and Carrick far from done in the squad it will be difficult to see anyone come in and push them out on a permanent basis, but fact is they will need replacing in the not too distant future (next summer for Scholesy) so why not get their replacements in now and blood them into the squad whilst also being more than capable of covering 1st team action when and if required?

Got to admit that is one hell of a squad though!

Didn't we just sign Powell? Carrick has 2-3 seasons left in him, Cleverley is also here. We don't need two midfielders, one surely, but not two.

I don't think we will buy Rodriguez unless we actually do sell Nani. And I would newer drop Valencia. This team is pretty much equal in skill to that and much cheaper.
I agree it would be cheaper, but it still leaves that unanswered addition of a proper holding player, Carrick and Scholes as a central partnership have still seen us exploited at the back as niether of them are capable of plugging the gaps, because they aren't really defensive CM's, where Modric has got a fresher pair of legs than Scholes, he's not going to be the answer to this problem of us being exposed by big sides. If anything I'd sacrifice Modric for a strong holding player in your cost effective side, plus writing off a 30m Modric for 15m Strootman or 18m M'Vila you save more money, even though the point of the post wasn't about saving money. Also in a 4-2-3-1 Nani would be a better answer than Valencia, especially with Rooney being up top alone, I'd understand Valencia over Nani if the lone striker was Hernandez or we signed a proper Target man. Valencia's too direct and his really outstanding attribute is crossing. In a 4-4-2 thats ideal but not in a 4-2-3-1

So you would rather play Welbeck out of position on the left, ahead of Ashley Young, who clearly has a better delivery and actually is a left winger?

And when we need to freshen or change things up. Obviously there will be plenty variation but United will never completely disregard a 4-4-2
