You have to keep checking your profile.  I am hoping that as part of the changes the personal message system will be made simpler but at this moment in time I have no idea how much of a priority it is.

Much appreciated... one more question - how will i know there is a reply? Is there some sort of notification or do i need to go into the profile and keep checking for a reply?

You just go into your profile, go the favorites tab and then click the icon on the right of your friend (in the Actions column) and you will presented with a message box for you to enter your message into. 

Hi... hopefully somebody will respond to me on this - are we able to send private messages on here once we've added a user as a friend? I've tried this but not sure if it is actually going through...

Does the other person need to confirm you as a friend first?

Also - how do you check these messages - do you need to go to "edit my profile" to check them each time or will you receive some form of notification on the main message board page?
