I consider myself to be incredibly lucky to have seen George Best play when I was a teenager.I wish I could explain to you younger fans just how supremely gifted he was. Unfortuneately unlike today there were few televised games back in his heyday and the record is slim. His close control was a gift from God enabling him to beat not just one but two, three, four or more players at a time. He also liked to stay on his feet and ride tackles--then either passing the ball or just as often going on to score himself. Best was also an accomplished header of the ball and a pretty mean tackler. Even Pele rated him the best in the world.

In terms of United players then the best 2 I have seen personally were Eric Cantona and Peter Scmiechel.  They were the difference between the sides we had that we had that could string together a decent cup run to the sides of the mid to late nineties who dominated English football. Cantona had simply the best vision of any footballer I have seen - he also had the creativity and talent to engineer passes that made other top flight footballers look like pub team members.  In an era of English football that was not blessed with the plethora of overseas stars that grace today's Premier League Cantona stood out as an entertainer and magician.  When other teams relied on players like Carlton Palmer we had Eric who lit up Old Trafford, and the whole Premier League like a beacon.  From 'that' chip followed by the peacock-esque strut to the incident at Crystal Palace - nobody, probably not even the man himself, knew what was coming next from him - he personified the capacity of football to shock, mesmerise and above all to entertain. There are staggering statistics about United's success rate with King Eric in the side but for me it was the anticipation of the adoring masses every time he touched the ball that made him a very, very special footballer.  Scmiechel was the best player there has ever been in his position - it is always difficult to judge players from differing eras but he was not only the best at the time he took the art of goalkeeping to a new level.  People often forget the goalkeeper when discussing who was the best player but Sir Matt Busby claimed that the signing of Alex Stepney was the last piece of the jigsaw in the European Cup winning team of '68 and along with Eric there is no doubt that the Great Dane was monumentally important to the success of United through the nineties.  All aspects of his game were better than any who had gone before - he was a master of quick distribution; his throws often heralded the start of the lightening quick counter attacks that was such a feature of United at that time.  His shot stopping and 'starfish' style block saved United many a time and the control of the back 4 was legendary. All in all Schmeichel was the complete goalkeeper and remains peerless 10 years after his retirement from United with the treble winners medals in his pocket.
