During the CSKA game I made a comment that Owen's brain was a half second ahead of his body and that Nani's body was 2 seconds ahead of his brain. With Owen you can see he knows exactly what position to be in and that he has thought about his next move long before he gets/plays the ball. Unfortunately his aging/unfit body will not allow him to do the things he'd like (and unfortunately it is also creeping in to Scholes' game as well). With Nani, his body is more than capable of pulling off almost any feat on the football field (I still think he has as much raw talent as Cristiano). It's his head that I worry about. I'm not trying to suggest he's not smart, but there's a term called the footballing brain which refers to a player's gift of knowing what to do on the pitch. I'm sure we all know a few daft characters who could create magic on a football field.
So in Nani's case he gets the ball and then there's a pause, it's clear that he's not sure what to do next. So he stops, turns, darts, looks around, cuts in, cuts back, step over, etc. (more often than not a combination of all of these). Then he ends up seeing the ball heading the opposite way because the defender has stolen it off him and Berba's in a perfect position in the box, where the ball should have been, screaming his head off. Then to make matters worse, this same slow thought process starts over before he realises he needs to track back and do some defending because Evra's now got to deal with the winger and the defender that had stolen the ball.
He's clearly suffering under the weight of expectation following Ronaldo's departure. The game against Stoke, where Sir Alex seemed to almost want to take him off the pitch by his ear, should have been his wake up call. Giggs came on and displayed clearly to him what he should have been doing. I think there have been slight improvements since that game, but nothing to make me feel comfortable. His chances will become increasingly less frequent when Giggs is fit and with Obertan's displays demanding Sir Alex's attention. If the rumours are true about Silva and Villa, then he'll be gone, maybe in an exchange. But his only hope is that SAF's belief in young players despite public criticism (Fletcher, O'Shea, Wes) will keep him in the squad. We need a large squad and Gigg's can only last so long.
I'd like to see him stay and improve his game, but I fear he's not a big club player and might end up like Tim Howard shining at a smaller club where the expectations are less.
