Re: the number 11 and 7 shirts

the idea with retiring the number 11 shirt would go down well with most fans as they understand what giggs as done for us he was there before we begain to dominate and also when players are given the number 11 shirt it will only had to the pressure of playing for us, the reason owen got the number 7 was to take the pressure of someone being claimed to be the new ronaldo etc....

Milan have don the same with maldinis number

I dont think R.GIGGS would want the club to retire the shirt ,hes far to modest for that ,we all know how respected GIGGS is as a person and a footballer, there should be another way of celebrating ,the achievements of GIGGS .

The number 11 will always be an iconic no ,Best WORE it as well ,along with no 7 ..

Whoever wears the 11 shirt when GIGGS retire ,has big boots to fill but that should be the challenge for that player??

I would suggest that may be name a stand after him along with a statue ...that would be a longer lasting memory rather than ,retireing the shirt.

If we sign another forward (Benzema, Silva, Hamsik etc) give them the no.7

The no.11 should be retired, at least for the next 10 years or so after Giggs retires.

    Silva & Hamsik aren't fowards.

The number 11 shirt should NOT be retired after Giggs retires for a few reasons:

    1. Firstly, it's far too much of an American idea for my tastes.

    2. Think how much it will mean to player's in the future if they are given the number 11 shirt that was once worn by Ryan Giggs?

    3. What makes the number 11 so special to be retired?  I mean, shouldn't the number 7 shirt be retired as well then?  What about the number 2 shirt when Neville retires?  What about the number 18 shirt when Scholes goes?  Once you start retiring numbers where do you stop?  Pretty soon you don't have any sensible squad numbers left.

If it does not matter who wins or loses then why do they bother to keep score?

    Agreed!!

Giggsy Has Been An Insperation For Our Team In The Last 15 Years On And Off The Field. He Doesn't Let Fame Get To His Head And He Is Still A Big Important Part Of Our Team. I Can See Him In The Future Still Being A Part Of Our Set-up One Way Or Another.

Re: the number 11 and 7 shirts

I know the number 7 shirt has a lot of history and some of the best players every in the histroy of the game have worn this shirt but SAF gave the number 7 to Owen as he thought Owen would do a good job and i think he has in the games that he has played even if other people on here dont think he deserved the shirt who cares SAF knows best its up to him.

As for the number 11 shirt maybe i think we should retire it as a mark of respect for when our genius Giggs retires which will be a very sad day for all us fans around the world thank god hes playing on for another season.Lets just enjoy watching him enjoying him and then decide what to do with number 11 when he does retire

first off if it was down to me i would retire the number 11 shirt as a mark of respect for how good a player giggs has been.. but all in all their just bloody numbers. who gives a rats ***. personally i feel fergie gave owen the number because...he had to give him a number. its a number lads. would the player be any different if the jerseys had letters or designs on them?

sorte it out m8 owen is more than worthy of the number 7 dont know if you know your history match winners you say bryan robson centre midfilielder never won a match but still had number 7 and just to shut you up match winner man city 3 united 4 who scored the winner in probably the best game of the season owen has the potential to be top goal scorer again he just needs more pitch time and he is bringing rooney ona treat since owen came rooney has scored more goals owen is obviously teaching him rooney hasnt scored out side the box all season just like owen plays also hes movement has increased

You want to give Nani, someone just showing his ability recently the number seven shirt? You don't think that would add a bit of pressure?
I think that's why Valencia didn't get it, because he had enough pressure with everyone wanting him to fill Ronaldo's boots. Also you need a number 7, everyone else had their number so it was given to Owen. That's my theory anyway.
